KC Fringe "Bill Murray's Cousin" review by pacconci

Stay away from Bill Murray

Bill Murray's Cousin: Live in Concert
KC Fringe Festival

I chose this show because the Buran Theatre company delighted me last year with their take on "Fitzcaraldo." This year, however was a miss. There are no actors. The piece should have been classified as a strictly musical entry.

The audience enters the Vulcan's Forge performance space and sees a ceiling-high cabana put together with solid and striped sheets. The show begins with the video of Bill Murray's film "What About Bob," being projected silently on the cabana. Soon lights fire inside the cabana and we see the silhouette of a guitar player. He plays well. Within minutes he begins to sing. Not as well. He is joined by another good guitar player who doesn't sing any better. The audience waits patiently for the real show to start. It doesn't. This is it. Like a knock-off Andy Kauffman skit, just as pointless, but nowhere near as funny.
