KC Fringe "Ice Cream Social... Issues" review by timlovestheatre

"Ice Cream Social" Is Sweet..... with Issues

Ice Cream Social... Issues
KC Fringe Festival

"Ice Cream Social....Issues" is a tasty new play by Natalie Liccardello (Pies From the Porn Kitchen) and her sister Talia Liccardello.  An ice cream social is a poorly disguised intervention.  When the guest of honor doesn't show things seriously go awry for one highly dysfunctional family.

Some great performances from the cast that includes Manon Halliburton, Meredith Wolfe, Hannah Cowger, Karla Fennick, Ari Bavel, Danelle Drury and Maxwell Frederickson.  Each brought some interesting and funny aspects to their character and portrayal.

If anything is missing from this show about a family it is the family itself.  The relationships between the characters need to be explored.  The audience needs to be given glimpses of the functioning of this family to be able to truly appreciate the dysfunction.  Sometimes we need the bad to recognize how good the good stuff really is; in this case we need the good to recognize how off the wall nuts this "bad" is.

You can still catch this show, a part of this year's KC Fringe Festival: Tue 7/24 at 8:00 pm, Thu 7/26 at 6:30 pm and Sat 7/28 at 9:30 pm.  More information available at www.kcfringe.org    Now pass the Magic Shell.
