5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche
KC Fringe Festival
Set in 1956, "5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche" is a smart little piece about a meeting of the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein ("Hello, sister!" - yes, the audience is considered members, especially poor Marjorie).
It's just a typical meeting, including the revealing of the prize quiche that apparently is so good it's orgasmic ("God bless the egg!"), until the air raid sirens call ... and the bomb is dropped on their Nebraska home.
One by one, they come out of the closet and officially declare themselves lesbians ("watch out for those Nebraskans and their secret lesbian societies!" one warns as she's trying to avoid coming out), as well as a few other secrets that I won't share for the sake of spoilers.
The piece is filled with double entendres, from the symbolic (and not so symbolic) eating of the quiche to the women's dislike of meat ("no men, no meat, all manners"). The humor is good, and the five women are all great characters. It's not poetry, but it is a lot of fun.
