White Theater "Next to Normal" review by audiencemember

Powerful Theater Rating: 5

Next to Normal
The White Theatre

Next to Normal at the White Theater is breathtaking and extremely powerful theater.

Mark Swezey has put together a brilliant cast and created a very compelling production. The music is extremely complex and played by a wonderful group of musicians. The multilevel set and the lighting create added visual and dramatic interest.

With this particular piece it's extremely important that you be able to understand all the lyrics (and there are a lot of them generally sung very rapidly)in order to be able to follow the story. Due to the impeccable diction of the actors, thankfully I was able to understand every word although at the Sunday performance the level of the sound was sometimes an issue. There were moments when the character's mike had not been turned up when needed.

While the entire cast was wonderful, Katie Meador as Diana, Patrick Lewallen as Gabe and Joel Morrison as Dan were especially noteworthy.

Be sure to see a performance of this captivating show before it closes.
