Why it's time we got rid of accents on stage

Why do actors do it? Why do directors make them do it? Perhaps they simply shouldn't bother. Colour-blind casting has long been the norm in British theatre, and nobody bats an eyelid at Shakespeare being transposed to modern-day settings, so why this jarring insistence on one detail of verisimilitude?
