Spooky Dog, the Coterie at Night's outlandish Scooby-Doo parody, is pure playground. That might sound like an insult, but I mean it as the highest praise. For 40 years now, fifth-grade Doo theorists have speculated on three key aspects of Mystery Machine lore: Who's high, who's gay, and why Fred always proposes sneaking off with Daphne. As its mystery-solving teens turn up clues on a county fairground, Spooky Dog wallows in those more important questions.

Saw this Friday night at 7pm. It has a lot of potential but also some major problems. The show I went to was too early in the evening, obviously. The audience seemed really uptight. The storyline went a bit flat, although maybe the audience suggestions weren't that great. It needed more catchy bit routines and plays on themes, rather than the eventually overdone cliche gag references. Sure, the cartoon itself was pretty much mindless dribble, the play didn't have to be really. With all the talent that they had to work with, it might have been a better show, had anyone put a little effort into writing a decent plot. It could have been longer then, and a more enjoyable experience.
