NEA Grants for 2010

The National Endowment for the Arts has announced the first round of 2010 grants. In total, the Arts Endowment will distribute $26,968,500 to support 1,207 projects nationwide. The following performing artsd organizations in the region have received funding:


The Coterie: $35,000 to support the production of two new musicals in the Lab for New Family Musicals. The Broadway team of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell and their co-bookwriter Jeffrey Hatcher will premiere a Theater For Young Audiences version of Lucky Duck, a rock/blues version of the story The Ugly Duckling and composer/writer team, Douglas Parker and Denver Casado will premiere their Mark Twain autobiographical musical, Life on the Mississippi.

Friends of Chamber Music: $12,500 to support presentations of chamber music, solo piano, early music, and educational programs. Six concerts and two What Makes It Great? educational programs will be presented.

Hesston College:
$10,000 to support a performance by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Prior to the performance, a student from South Africa will give community presentations about the country's arts, culture, and history.

Kansas City Ballet: $20,000 to support the creation and presentation of a new work by Toni Pimble, artistic director of the Eugene Ballet. The work will premiere at the Lyric Theatre in Kansas City, and will feature music performed by the Kansas City Symphony.

Friends of Alvin Ailey: $10,000 to support a residency by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The project, in partnership with the YWCA of Greater Kansas City, will include public and school performances and community outreach programs.

Kansas City Repertory Theatre: $20,000 to support the world premiere production of Venice, a new hip-hop musical by Eric Rosen and Matt Sax. The piece addresses the complexities of ethnic differences and conflict in the contemporary world, using Shakespeare's Othello as a narrative template.

Lyric Opera: $15,000 to support performances of Verdi's Rigoletto. Education and outreach activities will accompany the performances.

Salina Arts and Humanities Commission: $10,000 to support performances by Trio Globo, a contemporary acoustic jazz ensemble. Trio cellist Eugene Friesen, pianist and master harmonica player Howard Levy, and percussionist Glen Velez will perform for audiences in north central Kansas.

Unicorn Theatre: $15,000 to support the world premiere of Green Whales, a new play by Lia Romeo. Producing artistic director Cynthia Levin will direct the production.

William Inge Festival: $20,000 to support residencies by professional playwrights at the William Inge family home at the William Inge Center for the Arts. Playwrights will be provided with resources and support to develop new works over a period of eight to nine weeks.
