Little to Like about South Pacific
Rating: 2
South Pacific
Gladstone Theatre in the Park
Gladstone Theatre in the Park's production of South Pacific is probably the best mediocre production of the summer season in the greater Kansas City area. On the plus side, outstanding performances were delivered by Nellie Forbush and Bloody Mary. Luther Billis had many good moments and put in a strong performance as did Captain Brackett. Also, the use of the children's ensemble during Happy Talk was a very nice touch. The sets and lighting were absolutely wonderful and set the mood for each scene very nicely. The orchestra was excellent. Gladstone is lucky to have them for their shows.
On the minus side, the costuming was absolutely poorly done. Many of the scenes were poorly staged. Emile de Becque and Lt. Cable were not particulary convincing or strong in their roles. One of the neatest and fun little character roles - Lt. Buzz Adams - might as well have phoned in his performance. I don't think this was the actors fault. His deliver was fairly strong but obviously the director found little importance in this one brief scene. There were numerous problems with the body mikes the actors wore.
