Getting Back to Kansas City Burlesque Roots
Rating: 3
My Girdle is Killing Me
KC Fringe Festival
Part of Kansas City's past was the "Paris of the Plains" and that included Burlesque. The Kansas City Society of Burlesque is helping Kansas City remember its "naughty" roots, just like the dark roots in a blond hairdo. Even though the show was delayed due to the slow Fringe credit card processing, the show was stared with a flounce. The skanky dressed cast of characters was introduced to the audience. The premise of tonight's performance was that one of the "ladies" was killed by someone on stage and the audience was to figure it out by watching the performances.
Artemus Vulgaris' performance in trying to kill Daisy Buket (pronounced "bouquet") was an excellent example of pratfall comedy that was perfected during the vaudeville era. The belting tones of Annie Cherry while she was stripping was a reminder why burlesque should be brought back as an art form. The best strip was done by Miss Violet Vendetta while she bumped and ground to Nick Caves's groovy tunes. I am looking forward to seeing the KCSOB's performances in the hopefully near future.
