Intelligent Alphabet

American Alphabet
KC Fringe Festival
So far I've seen Khaaan, the Musical, The KCSOB mystery, My Girdle is killing me and this. Guess which one doesn't belong.
American Alphabet is a well thought out collaboration consisting of two monologues. Damien Torres-Botello spoke about reconciling his homosexuality and his Catholic faith. Lisa Cordes talked about her reconciling Racism found in her family's past with her own life and beliefs. Both gave passionate and well thought out observations in their own area, trading the stage back and forth.
I've seen Lisa Cordes act numerous times over the years and her essence has always been one of brutal intelligence and fearsome wit. Both are on display in this heartfelt piece which talks about her slave owning great great grandfather and her own brushes with racism from those she loves. In a capper, she ends with her own multiracial granddaughter and the message of hope is powerful.
Damian Torres-Botello comes off gentle and reasoned as he talks about his own experiences trying to reconcile his faith with some of the vile social stances of his church. Amused and saddened by the catch-22 the church has set up in regard to his sexuality, he sweetly expresses his frustration.
If thought alone were my criterion, I would give this a five, but not everything works. A few cheap and obvious shots are taken needlessly, and Lisa Cordes tends to overshadow Damian Torres-Botello. Mostly this hits the target and is well worth seeing.
