Most admirers of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City are hardly aware that
Mark Ferrell exists, much less that no Lyric production could possibly
happen without him. He is the company’s choral director, rehearsal
pianist, vocal coach, backstage conductor and a few other things thrown
in for good measure. He is also one of the most gifted people I’ve ever
known. Mark’s been a busy fellow lately: On April 20th he steps out from
the wings and takes up a baton to conduct the Lyric’s latest outing
with Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado. The production, which features
world-renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and local favorite Robert
Gibby Brand, is directed by William Theisen.
