Musical Theatre Heritage “Sweeney Todd” review by Russ Simmons

The acclaimed 2004 London production of Stephen Sondheim’s magnum opus “Sweeney Todd” was a pared-down version of the famed Tony Award-winning musical. It eschewed big production values, demonstrating that you don’t need elaborate sets and costumes to achieve theatrical power. The same can be said of the Musical Theater Heritage ‘concert’ version of this unsettling tale. It’s a riveting adaptation that provides a disturbing, but absorbing look at the personal cost of obsession.
