It’s hard to explain the attraction of the baritone sax. It looks like a plumber’s mistake and has a sound that can easily slip out of the player’s control. But once the baritone takes hold, it’s inescapable. Just ask Frank Basile, a New York baritonist who’s in town this week in a hard-hitting quintet with tenor saxophonist Rob Scheps.
