KC Rep "August: Osage County" review by SwizzleStick

August: Osage County
Kansas City Repertory Theatre

Maybe I'm a sucker for dysfunction, but I think "August: Osage County" is the best play to have been written in the last 20 or so years.  The Kansas City Rep's production is the third production of the play I have seen and I am mystified by the other reviews coming in on this service and others that fault the play and credit the production.  This play is a great one!

The Rep's production was the weakest I have seen, but that's not to say I didn't think it was successful.  It certainly was and they managed to pull off this gigantic piece of theatre, so kudos to all involved.  But for anyone thinking the play itself was at fault for the shortcomings perceived in their viewing of it here, I urge them to get the script and read it.  I think you will find it to be a much funnier and more three dimensional work of art than you might think.

I could be wrong, but I think this play is destined to go down as an American classic alongside "Long Day's Journey Into Night", "Death of a Salesman", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", and a whole host of others.
