KC Ballet raises $75,000 for dance library

Tatiana Dokoudovska was known to many as a strict and demanding teacher as well as a leader and visionary. In 1957, she founded Kansas City Ballet because she saw a true need in the community for the presence of classical ballet.

On April 24, former dancers, board members and patrons of the Kansas City Ballet in the 1960s and 1970s gathered to honor Miss Tania and remember her love of dance. The reunion was the highlight of a fundraising campaign created to name the library in the new Bolender Center after the company’s founder. According to Lisa Merrill Hickok, co-chairman of the campaign, “We wanted to honor and preserve Miss Tania’s memory and legacy for future generations.”  Headed by Michele Hamlett-Weith, Steve Short, Carl Welander and Mrs. Hickok, the campaign has raised more than $75,000 for the Library.

Miss Tania’s personal library and many of her personal items will be housed and displayed in the Tatiana Dokoudovska Library for Dance, allowing her to continue to be an inspiration to all who visit.

Kansas City Ballet wishes to congratulate the committee and thank those who helped with its success. These supporters will also have their names displayed on a plaque in the Library. Donations are still being collected for this naming opportunity. Contact Alison Patterson or 816-931-2232 x1307.
