Clint Ashlock, the Interim Artistic Director of the Kansas City
Jazz Orchestra, introduced Randy Brecker as "one of the greatest jazz
trumpeters of all time" Friday at Helzberg Hall. As guest artists of the
big band have often discovered, however, differentiating themselves
from Kansas City's deep reservoir of locally-based talent can prove
difficult. Brecker was often brilliant Friday, but his counterparts in
the orchestra matched him note for note.
