Welcome to Sam Shepard country. Shepard was and is an utterly unique voice among American
playwrights. Few other dramatists have been so drawn to the death of the
American West — or, to be precise, the myth of the West — and nobody
can match Shepard’s gift for creating what might be called tactile
surrealism. He places his characters in realistic physical environments
and then spins a sort of dreamscape of conflict, sadness and
resignation.
