Monk would have turned 95 last week. Utilizing a relatively exclusive
grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and its Jazz Masters
Live! program, the Jazz Series is going to throw him one incredible
birthday bash. "A Chunk of Monk" incorporates entertainment and
enlightenment in an attempt to peel back a few layers and see more
clearly into one of jazz's most enigmatic, charismatic figures. The
three-day affair features a brilliant pianist in his own right, 2010 NEA
Jazz Master Kenny Barron, and several superlative scholars. Anyone
hoping to experience the brilliance of jazz piano's high priest afresh,
or discover it for the first time, would be hard-pressed to find a
better avenue.
