During the second day of preparations for the 2005 summer
Aspen Music Festival, 85 student opera singers were taking turns
performing their audition monologues. Two hours into the day, a handsome
redheaded man strode onto the stage. Vigthor Zophoniasson, a
24-year-old from Iceland, gave a riveting monologue. Singer Ashley
Wheat, then 23, thought, “My project for the summer is getting to know
him.” A day later, she started talking to him, and they soon spent an
evening under the stars in deep and interesting conversation.
