Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, after years of writing distinctive plays that were often produced at the small LAByrinth Theater Company in downtown Manhattan, burst onto the national scene last year with a play that traveled a path few do anymore: There were no tryouts, no out-of-town productions.
