A year ago, Kansas City audiences heard a new work by noted Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov. Called “Sidereus,” it got an airing by the Kansas City Symphony, one of 35 orchestras that commissioned the 11-minute work. In the last few weeks, Golijov’s piece has come under coast-to-coast scrutiny as questions were raised about its originality. The conversation — on blogs, in the press and in the music world — turns on an eternal aspect of composing and questions about “borrowing,” plagiarism and collaboration.
