"Rigoletto" preview by Patrick Neas

When “Rigoletto” was first performed in Paris in 1857, the critic for La Gazette Musicale de Paris declared it Verdi’s weakest work: “It lacks melody. This opera has hardly any chance of being kept in the repertoire.” You’ve gotta love the critics. Now “Rigoletto” is considered one of the greatest operas ever written, and the Lyric Opera will present it for four performances beginning Saturday at the Lyric Theatre.
