Inge, the only Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright produced by the state of Kansas, was a laborious craftsman whose "realistic" plays never really seemed all that real. His dogged approach to character development relied heavily on exposition to "explain" why the people in his plays did what they did, and his version of colloquial speech always sounded a little manufactured. Yet, underneath it all, Inge always had something valid to write about.
