Filmmaker Debra Granik is a city girl. She grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and has lived her adult life in Boston and New York. Gutting squirrels and wielding an ax are not among her skill sets. So shortly after buying the screen rights to “Winter’s Bone” in 2006, Granik traveled to southern Missouri to meet the book’s author, Daniel Woodrell, a onetime Kansas Citian who now lives in West Plains.
