Coterie's "Life on the Mississippi" on KCUR

It is Clemens' early years that is the subject of Life on the Mississippi, a new musical at The Coterie Theatre that chronicles his time as a steamboat pilot, and how his later characters were inspired by people he met during his travels up and down the fabled river.

  1. I went to see Life on the Mississippi expecting it to be some version of Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer and was blown away by what I actually saw. The show was a truly powerful and genuinely affecting autobiographical story of Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) when he was young and left home to become a steamboat pilot. It has all the humor and great characters of a Twain novel, but with more heart, more drama and some truly unexpected turns. The music was first-rate - I hope they bring out a CD. The acting and overall production were also superb.
