eight blackbird preview by Jill Renae Hicks

The well-known, well-reviewed new music ensemble is composed of professional musicians hailing from several states; the group now makes its permanent home in Chicago. With sounds alternately ratchety, bounding, mellifluous, shrieking and twittery, eighth blackbird accepts commissions from all sorts of composers, declaring on its website its delight to perform the work of "young and old, modernist and indie." This week, thanks to a partnership between the Mizzou New Music Initiative and the Odyssey Chamber Music Series, eighth blackbird comes to Columbia for the first time.
