Brian Lewis, Topeka Symphony preview by Bill Blankenship

Violin virtuoso Brian Lewis, who has performed around the world, said playing in White Concert Hall is "like coming home, playing for an old friend." Lewis will be the guest artist at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in White Concert Hall when conductor candidate Christopher Kelts directs the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, with which Lewis made his orchestral debut at age 15 in 1984.

Two seasons ago, trumpeter and bandleader Wynton Marsalis brought his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to help the Harriman-Jewell Series pop the cork in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Later this year, Marsalis and his outfit will make their fifth appearance on the series, this time presenting the rare opportunity to hear his extended composition “Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration,” which combines the jazz propulsion of his band with a 70-voice choir, the Chorale Le Chateau, conducted by Damien Sneed.
