Robert Butler on the value of loving and hating movies

A framed cartoon torn from The New Yorker sits on my desk. It depicts the auditorium of a Broadway theater during a performance. One fellow in a suit and bowtie — clearly a reviewer — is scribbling on a notepad. The guy in the seat behind him is leaning forward and whispering: “Tell me, sir. Is it good or bad?”
